Neal Street Productions announces the cast of The Motive and the Cue which will be directed by Sam Mendes and staged at the National Theatre's Lyttelton Theatre in May, 2023.
Johnny Flynn (Emma, Beast) will play Richard Burton, Tuppence Middleton (Downton Abbey, Mank) will play Elizabeth Taylor and and Mark Gatiss (Sherlock) will play John Gielgud. Written by Jack Thorne (His Dark Materials, Harry Potter and the Cursed Child), the story tracks the rocky relationship between Gielgud and Burton as they endeavour to stage a highly anticpated production of Hamlet on New York's Broadway in 1964.
Sam Mendes and Producer Caro Newling, found their inspiration for the project during the pandemic and joined forces with the National Theatre to develop and co-produce this brand new play; The Motive and the Cue.
Also joining the cast are: Allan Corduner, Ryan Ellsworth, Aysha Kala, Luke Norris, Michael Walters, Laurence Ubong Williams, Janie Dee, Aaron Anthony, Tom Babbage, Elena Delia, Phoebe Horn, Huw Parmenter, David Ricardo-Pearce, David Tarkenter and Kate Tydman.
The play’s creative team includes: production design by Es Devlin; Katrina Lindsay, costume designer; Jon Clark, lighting design; composer Benjamin Kwasi Burrell; Paul Arditti, sound designer; and Luke Halls, video designer. Associate director is Zoé Ford Burnett.
